Public Land for Affordable Housing

As someone who has focused on infill development over the past few years, I’ve seen the cost of lots skyrocket in price. Even in challenged neighborhoods, finding lots for sale and finding them at a price that makes sense to build affordable homes on is getting tougher. The days of $5,000 lots or picking up lots from tax sales are waning for sure. But the City of New York is taking that hurdle out of the equation with its “24 in 24” plan that seeks to launch 24 affordable housing projects in 2024.

The plan includes the use of city-owned land. That component goes a long way in making affordable housing projects work.
