Bigger Houses, Smaller Households

A recent report from the US Census Bureau looks at how the size of single-family homes built today is considerably larger than those constructed mid-century, but over the same period, the number of people living in those houses has declined.

From the 1960s to today, homes have increased from roughly 1,500 to 2,200 square feet while the number of people living in them has declined from approximately 3.4 to 2.5.

In one of my recent developments in Oklahoma City, two of our twenty-two homes were constructed at 720 square feet each. These are certainly not tiny homes, but they are perfect for a single resident or couple. Given the need for more density in urban areas, the lack of available lots, the skyrocketing price of land, and the trend of smaller households, building smaller is certainly a great solution.
