There was a packed house at the First Baptist Church today to honor the life of Betty Boyd.
Eighty six years old and she could still hold the attention of any audience, including today. A mother, legislator, television personality, educator and lifelong Tulsan, Betty was what we all wish we could be- or at least could someday become. She seemed to value everyone she met- no matter who they were. She proved to me she could nail a script on the first take- but still have a twinkle in her eyes just as sweetly on the last one.
Oklahoma lost something remarkable when we lost Betty. But, judging by the presence of all those who came to honor her today, the gain is perhaps greater than the loss. Particularly if we take with us the things she shamelessly stood for- honesty, sincerity, little kids, respect for others and civility in politics.
